Some shooters start with a 5-10 grain load of real black powder and then some Pyrodex over that. Sounds like a lot of fussing and won't solve your problem. Turn it with an electric drill, and run the emery up and down the barrel a couple of hundred times; that should remove a lot of the pits unless they are very deep. Change the emery often to keep it sharp. Finish up with very fine emery to polish. This has done wonders for a couple of old shotguns I have messed with.

With a shorter barrel you are going to have a shorter sight radius, and it may be more difficult to get a good sight picture with the shorter barrels as you get older (fuzzy sights front and rear). I HAD a 24" TC Grey Hawk with both .50 and .54 barrels, both 48" twist.Then forge you out a simple strap staple from a coat hanger or 1/8th inch wire.
